Toronto Life Review

This one’s a sure contender for best Indian cooking in the downtown core. Skilful frying leaves pakoras and plump, potato-stuffed samosas light and greaseless; unspiced complimentary pappadums are crisp and fresh.

Tandoori chicken is plump and juicy—not withered by heat. Rich, creamy mushroom and chicken broth balances turmeric and fresh coriander, while main courses show a fine array of flavours and textures. Tender lamb vindaloo relies on deeply layered spicing instead of chilies and vinegar to build heat, while shrimp dopiaza correctly defines itself with masses of charred onions and a garnish of scallions.

Anise seed, cashews, cream and almonds spike a heavy roux-based white sauce for meat, veg or shrimp bagam pasanda. The one disappointment is a penchant for diced mixed vegetables that taste as if they spent too long in the freezer, lowering the tone of an oily biryani. Friendly servers offer options for spicing levels. Monsoon Indian wine is the lone moment of interest on a token list.

National Post March 2003 - reviewed by Jacob Richler

"The Mulligatawny was enjoyable, pleasantly spiced and packing tender chicken...."

"The lamb shish kebabs were tender, moist, smokey and well spiced. The butter chicken, wherein morsels of moist and smokey tandoori chicken are folded into a rich, nutty butter and tomato sauce most fragrantly spiced, packed a good, hot afterbite and was really top notch. The murgh saag, chicken in spinach, featured extremely tender morsels of chicken in an aromatic puree of sweet, fresh spinach."

"The Tandoori chicken is perfectly spiced, and fabulously moist and smokey, one of the better ones around."

"Trimurti opened a few weeks back in a neighbourhood that's saturated with Indo bistros -but it's already standing out form the competition. Owned by longtime Matarj server Danny Chin and his partners, Sidney Long and chef Pradeep Jagtap, this smallish, pretty room is proving popular.

Here's the buzz:

Phool Gobi Tandoori, a full head of cauliflower that's been marinated in yogurt and fired in the tandoor. The result looks like red electric brains and tastes just as wild. Something new, Chili Paneer sees cubes of soft tofu-like cheese swimming in a red sea of fiery pepper and sweet onion.

Their naan is simply otherworldly. Thin like the lightest cracker, its surface blistered from the tandoor, the bread is delivered straight to the table. Unlike at other spots, Trimurti's ethereal flatbread doesn't sit on the steam table…"

Authentic Indian Cuisine at its best.
A definite Four Star Rating

"Trimurti Indian Restaurant, a true winner serving authentic Indian gastronomy for the most discriminative gourmet. This new kid on the block is Toronto's best kept secret, but not for long.

Trimurti Indian Cuisine can boast having a variety of over 75 different offerings, from their famous Tandoor Ki Mahek Clay Oven, you can order their delicious Shahi Paneer Tikka (homemade cottage cheese marinated in yogurt and spiced, and cooked to perfection in a tandoor). A definite must is the Murgh Afghani (boneless chicken pieces marinated in a cashew paste, cream, yogurt and spices).

Nineteen different vegetarian dishes to choose from, including the Chana Masala (chick peas cooked with potatoes, onions and aromatic spices) or the Subzi Jalfrezie (mixed vegetable cooked with onions, tomatoes, green peppers and spices).

Not true that all Indian cuisine is super hot, here they will prepare it to your liking, mild, medium or hot. Just ask your server.

For this little corner of India, with its authentic Indian cuisine prepared with style and the service done with friendliness, we take great pleasure in awarding Trimurti a Definite Four Star Rating."
